What's So Heavenly About Heavenly Hash?

The name Heavenly Hash comes from a marshmallow candy of the same name.  That candy is produced by Elmer’s, and has been since 1923.  The candy has been sold, along with Gold Brick, during the Easter season.  “There are different parts of the country that have their own Easter brand traditions.  In the Gulf South, that’s Gold Brick and Heavenly Hash.  Some places it might be marshmallow Peeps or jelly beans,” says Rob Nelson, Elmer’s CEO (in an interview published in The Times-Picayune)

Heavenly Hash has also been attributed to an ice cream flavor.  Take chocolate and vanilla ice cream, mini marshmallows, and nuts, blend them together to create something that’s similar to rocky road, but has an unsurpassed smoothness.  The vanilla cuts down some of the chocolate flavoring.

For desserts other than candies and ice cream, there is a huge range of what can be called Heavenly Hash.  For instance, at Cooks.com, there is a recipe for Heavenly Hash salad that includes whipping cream, vanilla, and pecans in the list of ingredients, but it leaves out the chocolate.

At The Kitchn, there are Heavenly Hash bars which contain chocolate, vanilla extract, marshmallows, and almonds.  So, as you can see, the range is very wide as to what you can put into your pot.  The trick here is to exercise your creativity and just experiment with the ingredients.

There are several ice cream shops and dessert places where you can get Heavenly Hash ice cream.

  • Handel’s Ice Cream has several locations in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and California.  Rated highly all over the country, this makes a great place to get a sample.
  • For those who are in the New York area, there’s Stewart’s Shops.  They have a ton of locations out there to serve you and your Heavenly Hash needs.
  • To wrap up the Southern part of the country, there’s Bruster’s, which has locations all over the South and Southeast.  You can get your Heavenly Hash in a waffle cone.

Consider Heavenly Hash to be the more sensitive alternative to rocky road.  It’s got a better name, the three gallon container fits just as easily into your Turbo Air dipping cabinet, and, well, it has chocolate! What’s not to love?
